

Lifesaving and Leadership programs
Whether you are in the water or just walking down the street, Back to Basics Swim Academy recognizes the importance of having lifesaving skills that can be of aid in any situation. We offer a variety of aquatic lifesaving courses as well as stand-alone First Aid Courses. You never know when these skills will come in handy!
Bronze Medal Courses
The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Medal courses are the first step into becoming a lifeguard or swim instructor. These courses will challenge participants physically and mentally in regards to problem-solving and decision-making.
Bronze Star |
Prerequisites: None, recommended at least 11 years of age This is the introductory course to the leadership program. Participants will develop swimming proficiency, rescue techniques and apply team building skills. This is an excellent preparatory course for Bronze Medallion and provides swimmers with a sense of aquatic lifesaving. Includes a timed 400m swim. |

Prerequisites: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star Certification (does not need to be current) Reference Material Required: Canadian Lifesaving Manual This course emphasizes the four lifesaving principles of water rescue: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Candidates will learn self-rescue techniques as well as the rescue of others and will be challenged to think critically and efficiently. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite course for more advanced lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Includes a timed 500m swim. |

Bronze Cross Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion and either Emergency First Aid OR Standard First Aid Reference Material Required: Canadian Lifesaving Manual This course is the transition between lifesaving and lifeguarding, allowing for candidates to become more familiar with aquatic supervision and safety. Candidates will undergo more advanced training and strengthen their communication and teamwork skills. Bronze Cross will prepare candidates for assistant lifeguard positions as well as swim instructing. This course is a prerequisite for the Lifesaving Society’s National Lifeguard certification. |

First Aid Courses
Learn how to effectively handle injuries and any other medical emergencies at work or home. These courses are Lifesaving Society certified and are WSIB recognized. We offer both new and recertifications.
Emergency First Aid with CPR-B

Prerequisites: None Emergency First Aid is for those who want a general understanding of first aid procedures and how to treat emergency injuries. Adult and Child CPR and obstructed airways will be taught. |

Standard First Aid with CPR-C

Prerequisites: None Standard First Aid integrates all of Emergency First Aid and is designed for those who require more in-depth training of injuries and other medical emergencies. Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and obstructed airways will be taught. |
