Splash into Safety: Essential Water Safety Tips for Kids and Parents

May 17, 2024

Water is a source of endless fun especially as the weather warms up. It’s also a great way to cool off and beat the summer heat. However, it’s crucial to approach every splash session with a dose of caution. Whether you’re poolside, lakeside, or seaside, safety should be your top priority. Here at Back to Basics Swim Academy, we’re passionate about making sure that laughter and learning go hand-in-hand with water safety. So, grab your goggles, and let’s dive into essential water safety tips that will keep you and your loved ones safe and sound while making a splash!

1. Supervision is Key:  Always supervise children when they are in or around water. Whether it’s a pool, lake, or the sea, active supervision is crucial. This means keeping young swimmers within arm’s reach and having your eyes on them at all times. Even if your children can swim, supervision is a must!

2. Learn to Swim:  Swimming is not only fun but a vital life-saving skill. Ensure that everyone in the family learns to swim. At Back to Basics Swim Academy, we offer swimming lessons for all ages, starting from toddlers to adults. Our experienced instructors make learning to swim fun and safe.

3. Use Life Jackets Appropriately: When boating or swimming in natural bodies of water, wearing a properly fitted life jacket can be a lifesaver, especially for less confident swimmers. Ensure that the life jackets are approved by Transport Canada and fit the swimmer properly.

4. Establish and Enforce Rules:  Set clear rules for water safety, such as no running around the pool, no diving in shallow water, and no swimming without permission. Rules help reinforce safety practices and make everyone aware of the boundaries.

5. Be Prepared for Emergencies:  Knowing how to respond in an emergency is just as important as prevention. Learn basic water rescue skills and CPR and equip your pool area with rescue equipment, such as life rings or reaching poles.

In addition to these tips, Back to Basics Swim Academy offers specialized life-saving courses. These courses are designed to equip individuals with the skills needed to perform rescues and administer first aid in water-related emergencies. Whether you’re looking to start a career as a swim instructor, lifeguard or simply want to be prepared to ensure the safety of your family and friends, our life-saving courses are an excellent resource.

Join us at Back to Basics Swim Academy to learn more about our swimming and life-saving courses, and let’s make water safety a priority for everyone.
