Why May Is the Perfect Time to Focus on Swim Safety—for All Ages

May 15, 2025

May Is All About Water Safety and It Starts with the Ability to Swim

At Back to Basics Swim Academy, we believe water safety isn’t just something we teach, it’s something we live. And in May, that message takes centre stage.

This month marks National Water Safety Month, with National Learn to Swim Day on May 17th. As the weather warms up and summer plans take shape, now is the time to make sure your family is swim-ready and water-safe.

From backyard pool parties to beach weekends and cottage adventures, strong swim skills can be the difference between worry and peace of mind. Between hesitation and confidence. Between panic and preparedness.

Why Water Safety Starts with Swimming

We’re lucky to live in a country surrounded by water. Canada’s beautiful lakes, rivers, and coastlines are what make summer adventures so memorable, but they also come with serious safety risks.

Every year, about 500 Canadians lose their lives to drowning, many just a few steps from safety, often in shallow water. The most vulnerable? Children under 5 and young adults aged 20 to 34.

But here’s the good news: drowning is preventable.

A landmark study in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that formal swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88% for kids aged 1 to 4. That’s not just impactful, it’s life-saving.

What Real Water Safety Looks Like at Back to Basics

At Back to Basics, we go way beyond freestyle and backstroke.

Our approach is rooted in practical safety skills, because not every swim happens in calm, clear, supervised pools. We prepare swimmers for real-life situations; unexpected slips, deep ends, docks, waves, and everything in between.

Here’s what we teach:

  • How to safely enter and exit the water
  • What to do if you fall in unexpectedly
  • How to float, tread water, and stay calm under pressure
  • How to move confidently through shallow and deep water
  • When and how to call for help
  • How to spot and avoid risky situations before they escalate

Our goal? Confidence, capability, and calmness in the water, and outside of it.

Spring Lessons Make Summer Safer

If you’re thinking about swim lessons, spring is the smartest time to start.

Getting into the water now and continuing through the summer session gives your swimmer time to build strength, comfort, and skills in a steady, stress-free way.

Here’s why consistency matters:
✅ Kids feel confident when summer camp swim time rolls around
✅ Parents breathe easier knowing their child is prepared
✅ Teens get a head start on leadership and lifeguard pathways
✅ Adults have more time to conquer fears and feel free in the water

By the time summer arrives, your swimmer isn’t just ready, they’re thriving. And that makes summer safer, smoother, and a whole lot more fun!

It’s Never Too Late to Learn

If you didn’t learn to swim as a kid, you’re not alone. And you’re definitely not too late.

At Back to Basics, we support adult learners with empathy, patience, and privacy. Whether you’re learning for vacation, tackling a fear, or simply want to enjoy the water without worry, our instructors meet you where you are, and help you move forward with confidence.

Learning to swim as an adult is one of the most empowering things you can do. And if you’re a parent? It sets a powerful example: growth has no age limit.

5 Water Safety Tips You Can Use Today

Swim lessons are a game-changer, but water safety is a family affair. Here are five simple tips you can start using right away:

  1. Appoint a “Water Watcher”: Always have one adult solely responsible for keeping eyes on swimmers. No phones. No distractions.
  2. Wear Lifejackets Around Open Water: This goes for everyone, not just kids or beginners.
  3. Secure Pools with Fences and Self-Latching Gates: A physical barrier can save a life.
  4. Talk About Water Rules Often: Even toddlers can understand rules like “ask before getting in.”
  5. Learn CPR: In an emergency, a fast response can make all the difference.

These small steps, paired with regular lessons, create a safer environment for everyone.
